Learn more about what differentiates synthetic oil from conventional oil below! Have any questions along the way? Don’t hesitate to get in touch with us online for further clarification!

What is Conventional Oil?

Conventional oil or “regular” oil is a petroleum product that has been used in internal combustion engines for decades. Conventional oil helps reduce engine wear and offers lubrication to internal parts. This type of oil is distilled from crude oil mined from the ground. The primary purpose of a conventional oil is to protect your Chevy car, truck, or SUV from high-temperature damage.

What is Synthetic Oil?

Synthetic oil is similar to conventional oil in that it’s a petroleum-based product. However, synthetic oil offers enhanced lubrication properties and is much more stable. Synthetic oils are chemically developed from petrochemicals through an intense process to provide properties that make them a more attractive option than conventional oils.

That’s why synthetic oils are better at retaining protective properties and oxide at a slower rate. That’s also why synthetic oil is more expensive. You’ll have to weigh the following benefits of synthetic oil and see if it’s worth the higher price:

  • Are less viscous at lower temperatures
  • Offer enhanced engine cleaning properties
  • Better protect critical turbocharger parts when equipped

Full Synthetic Oil vs. Synthetic Blends

You already know about the difference between conventional oil vs. synthetic oil. However, there are also synthetic blends available to Ballantyne and Matthews shoppers. Synthetic blends are half synthetic oil and half conventional oil, so you can take advantage of the superior properties of synthetic oils at a much lower price. You’ll want to take into consideration that some vehicles exclusively use synthetic oil, so a blend could end up causing more harm than good.
