Learn How to Check the Oil Level in a Car

Many new models have an electronic oil monitor and don’t use traditional dipsticks. So we suggest reading your owner’s manual to check the auto manufacturer’s recommendations. If you’re checking manually before proceeding on your Fort Mill drive, simply follow these steps, and you’ll know how to check car oil:

  1. Park on level ground and turn off your engine. Don’t proceed until your engine is cold.
  2. Open your hood and find the oil dipstick.
  3. Pull out the dipstick and wipe any oil away from the end of it with a rag.
  4. Re-insert the dipstick into its tube, pull it out again, and look at both sides to see the oil level.

Every dipstick has some way of indicating the optimal oil level. The level is good if the top of your oil streak is between the two marks or within a cross-hatched area. If it isn’t, it’s time to add more motor oil. Be sure to buy the type of oil and grade recommended in your owner’s manual, available at the South Charlotte Chevrolet parts store. Then, remove the oil filler cap, and add oil a little at a time until the dipstick shows it’s at the proper level.

Why Check Your Car’s Oil Level?

The correct oil level is crucial to your vehicle’s performance on Ballantyne streets. You should change your oil at least twice yearly. How often should you check your oil? Do it at least once a month. Along with checking your oil level, look for leaks and changes to your oil’s look, smell, and feel. If it looks black or grimy, you need to change it! Schedule a service appointment at South Charlotte Chevrolet without delay.
